Floral – Aroma

For me, floral notes are an interesting feature of coffee, at times almost hidden. I always seem to notice them at the end of a group of aromas or as the final note that shoots up the back of my nose as I am drinking.

This aroma descriptor is said to be similar to the fragrance of flowers. It is associated with the slight scent of different types of flowers including honeysuckle, jasmine, wintergreen dandelion and nettles, but I am not yet at the point I can distinguish these individually.

Apparently it is mainly found when an intense fruity, herbal or green aroma is perceived, but it normally resides as a secondary aroma. As such you may find that, like whisky, if you close your mouth while smelling the coffee first, but then open your mouth for your 2nd attempt, the lighter tones will likely appear.

Below are coffees that I have detected this aroma
