Surry Hills is a tough place to set up a successful cafe if for no other reason than there are so many options already available, but these guys have done just that. More so, they have taken the education of coffee drinkers seriously, evidenced by everything from their name, the rotating showcase espressos and filter coffees, and the occasional “black Saturday” event that focuses on the flavors and aromas of black coffee.

Today I started off with a filter coffee from Honduras (Cerro Azul) that was roasted here in the cafe to ensure the lighter flavors and aromas have a better chance of being espressed. While advertised as a spiced fruit cake, I got more sultana and less spice than I expected. Certainly needed to wait for it to cool down before I got much though.

I then tried the ‘showcase espresso’ which was a Colombian single origin from the El Denisio farm, again roasted in house, that really performed well. With a touch of peach in the aroma and a jammy body, the slight brightness in the middle and a clean finish, this was a delicious coffee.

So while there is a wide range of cafes in Surry Hills, this one is a cafe I’d happily recommend to anyone looking for a coffee experience.
