Reviews…. they can hurt so good

So I was sitting a cafe, drinking my coffee and relaxing with the headphones on, minding my own business when a guy comes up to my table and interrupts me.

“Are you James, the guy that reviews cafes…?”

At which point I start thinking about any of my reviews that might have been off the mark or too negative …. “um… yeah… that’s me…”

One-Does-Not-Simply-Make-It-Hurt-So-Good
Well it turns out the guy was one of the baristas (and I believe managers) of a cafe I recently reviewed in Castle Hill called Youeni where I had waited over half an hour for a very average filter coffee that turned out to be rather expensive to boot.

In any case, he started off thanking me for the review, saying that he appreciated how fair and balanced the review was, even after I reminded him how negative a great proportion of it turned out.

He explained that like many other small businesses, most people just put up negative reviews with out explaining why, offering very little positive recourse. You could easily use the article I wrote, “When cafe reviews are on the bland side of inoffensive” as a perfect example of the what such negative reviews can lead to.

Either way, it felt really good to have someone from a cafe find value in one of my reviews. Considering the time and money I’ve put towards this passion of mine, while it still doesn’t earn enough money to even pay for the (sometimes excessive amounts of) coffee I consume, at least there is a bit of positive karma coming my way. 🙂
