Passion: 10/10
Crema: 9/10
Started off today with the Honduras “Maria Du Jesus” as a batch brew and was slightly taken aback by the container (seen in pic). It seems that cafes are not only pushing the boundaries of what they serve but how they serve it. That aside, the concept of being able to top up your batch as it cools is a great idea. As for the coffee itself, it started with a nice hit of vanilla aroma, and then progressed as a more robust and full bodied coffee with a touch of sour plum (which became more apparent as it cooled). This is the first coffee that has developed a taste of “red” for me, but I am guessing that is kind of a rusty earthiness. Very drinkable, and an interesting coffee experience to boot.
I then followed that up with an espresso of Colombian “Del Palmar, Huila” which totally cleansed out my palate. While it mellowed out as the coffee cooled, it started with a massive whack of “pucker up taste these tart berries”, which was well balanced by a dark smoky wisp of what I assume is molasses. Really interesting contrast between the two coffees.
In summary, if you are down towards Wynyard and looking to try something new, these guys have it in spades. Coming to a cafe where you know the guys behind the machine are passionate coffee enthusiasts means you chance of getting something exceptional here is quite high. Certainly check them out.
